Pietà。聖殤

In this reinterpretation of William-Adolphe Bouguereau’s iconic “Pietà” (1876), the classical narrative is subtly transformed to reflect the lost innocence, strength, and resilience at the intersection of multiple identities. The central figure, originally Jesus, is now embodied by myself —a queer Asian individual navigating marginalization, social stigmas, and metaphorically, self-sacrifice.

The composition remains faithful to the original, capturing the intimate moment of profound grief and acceptance. As the viewer’s gaze lingers on this reimagination, its symbolisms unfold. The decision to replace the traditional narrative challenges preconceived notions of sacred imagery, inviting contemplation on the universality of human suffering and the transformative power of empathy.

Through the use of photography and meticulous photo manipulation, I attempt to seamlessly integrate a contemporary narrative into the classical framework, establishing a visual dialogue that spans centuries. The lighting, reminiscent of classical chiaroscuro, enhances the emotional and spiritual depth, casting a soft glow on the main character and emphasizing the quiet strength emanating from self-portraiture.

In exploring themes of self-sacrifice, the artwork invites viewers to consider the resilience required to survive a world that may not fully understand or embrace diversity. While challenging notions that see suffering as synonymous with shame, ‘Pietà。聖殤’ (2024) offers a counterpoint to the sadness inherent in the original artwork through an allegoric manifestation of a perished self. A memory of me that seized to exist for a new self to arise. Stronger. Better. Resilient.
